After an ACL repair with a hamstring autograft and a follow up debridement surgery to clean up my fat pad 1 year later (which I am now dubious was necessary), I was left with an incredibly stiff and almost always sore knee, despite doing 50 sessions of traditional physical therapy and constant icing. I couldn't stand or sit for long periods of time, I could barely ride a bike without getting incredibly sore the next day, and I certainly couldn't run, which most people are doing 6 months after a successful ACL surgery. I am a former 2-sport college athlete and a very active person. I loved to ski (which was how I tore my ACL), play soccer, and surf, none of which I even conceived of doing again from the time of my injury in January of 2013 until I began seeing Ryan at IPA Manhattan in November of 2015. During that time I consulted 5 different Orthopedics (3 who were surgeons for professional teams), 4 traditional physical therapists, an acupuncturist, and 2 chiropractors, all of whom said something along the lines of, "knees are tricky, it will eventually come around." Well it didn't, and 3 years after my initial ACL tear I was completely hopeless and convinced that I would never run or play sports again. It's hard to fathom how life-changing this is until it happens to you. Then I went to IPA on a tip from a colleague. I met with Ryan and from the outset I could tell that this process was different. It's a heavily manual therapy devoted to making changes in the way the problem joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments interact, which eventually leads to proper mechanics and motion. With all of the problems in my knee it took a few sessions for Ryan to sort out what worked, but once he did it was as if each session he was dialing back the stiffness in my knee. With each passing month my knee felt looser and stronger, and after 7 months I was running. Three weeks ago I went skiing for the first time since 2013. Simply put, this practice changed my life, and I will always be grateful.
