FAQs

Can I keep seeing a therapist even if I’m feeling better?

Yes, you can continue to see our physical therapist after you have completed your therapy sessions. There are several holistic, patient-centered approaches to this, for example:

  • Our therapist will meet with you to go over and discuss your at-home therapy program.
  • You can re-evaluate your progress after a month to ensure you're still on track and modify your home program as needed.
  • You can make an appointment with our therapist at regular intervals (for example, every six months) to assess your progress, ensure you are not regressing, and address any new issues that have arisen.

We can also meet you at your gym to work with you on determining what equipment and exercises would be beneficial in your ongoing recovery.

How do I make payment for each session?

To ensure that you understand your requirements, we recommend that you contact your insurance carrier to determine your coverage, copayments/coinsurance, and overall plan.

At each visit, our staff will assess your insurance benefits and notify you of your payments.

We accept the following payment methods:

  • Cash
  • Check
  • Debit card
  • Credit card

We also provide payment options based on the individual's situation and can provide additional information upon request.

It is our policy to collect payment at the time of service.

What type of clothing should I wear to appointments?

Wear loose-fitting clothes that are easy to move in and allow easy access to the area causing your symptoms. We also recommend that you wear comfortable shoes or sneakers.

How long should each appointment last?

All of our appointments last approximately 1 hour.

The number of visits and duration of your care plan will be determined by your specific needs. As you and our therapist have discussed, we recommend attending more frequently in the early stages of your therapy to ensure progress.

Initially, you'll see our therapist twice or even three times per week, gradually decreasing to fewer weekly visits and increasing the time between meetings as you progress through treatment.

Can I benefit from physical therapy treatments?

You most certainly can.

Physical therapists are experts at evaluating the whole person. This means that we seek to identify all of the factors associated with your condition. We understand the body's interconnectedness and how a problem in one area may be a symptom pointing to the source of the situation in another.

We are also adept at determining whether you are dealing with one problem or several issues affecting you and your function.

Everyone can benefit from physical therapy, but that doesn't mean it's the only thing you need. We believe in collaborating with other healthcare professionals and working with you while another practitioner assists you in getting the results you deserve.

We can discuss your options and help you decide if physical therapy is right for you. Contact us today to learn more about how PT can help you and make an appointment with one of our dedicated staff members.

Are physical therapy treatments painful?

Physical therapy is intended to relieve pain rather than aggravate it. Your pain levels, however, may fluctuate. Our therapists will clearly define what constitutes "normal" pain and what does not. To facilitate improvements in your overall condition, some situations necessitate exercises or actions that can elicit a pain response.

You may experience some discomfort as a result of using weakened or recovering muscles. Alternatively, due to the nature of the condition, restoring range of motion after surgery can be painful for some. Unfortunately, experiencing a temporary increase in pain may be critical to your recovery. Although it may seem counterintuitive, there are times when increased pain early on can prevent more severe pain later on.

Rest assured that we will do everything possible to reduce your pain and prevent it from worsening during our physical therapy session. Communication with our therapist will aid in the reduction of any discomfort you may experience during our physical therapy treatments.

We want you to be pain-free and back to your normal activities as soon as possible, and we will do everything we can to prepare you for any discomfort.

What do I need to know about physical therapy?

Physical therapists are highly educated professionals who specialize in musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. Physical therapists work as part of a healthcare team that includes physicians, surgeons, and other medical professionals.

We also collaborate with other healthcare providers such as chiropractors, massage therapists, and acupuncturists to ensure that your treatment plan is as effective and efficient as possible.

Physical therapists are movement specialists who have received extensive training and education in musculoskeletal disorders and diseases. Manual therapists treat pain and restore function by using their hands.

Physical therapy seeks to restore pain-free mobility and function while preventing recurrence of the injury or pain. Physical therapists provide comprehensive care, from prevention to intervention. Our physical therapists evaluate your movement patterns, identify the source of your pain, and collaborate with you to manage or eliminate it.

While every patient's condition and pain is different, a physical therapist at IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy will use a variety of targeted manual therapy techniques, exercises, modalities, and equipment to quickly relieve pain and restore function.

How is the progress of my physical therapy treatment tracked?

You should notice a significant improvement in your discomfort and overall function as you progress through your rehabilitation activities.

Keeping track of your pain and mobility levels as you progress through our physical therapy program is an effective way to measure your improvement and progress.

Additionally, keeping track of your impairments and functional abilities provides physical therapists with objective data to compare to initial measurements. Furthermore, your reports and personal experiences aid in validating your progress and alerting our therapist to regressions and/or a lack of progress.

The bottom line is that you should notice improvements in how you feel and function throughout therapy. If you are not following an anticipated path of progress, our therapist will reassess the situation or make recommendations for further testing or treatments.

What should I do to get ready for my first appointment?

We ask all patients to bring a few items with them on their first visit to our office.

  • Please fill out our forms online, then print out the patient forms, fill them out, and bring them with you to your initial evaluation. If you cannot do so or do not have access to a printer/computer, please allow extra time when you arrive to complete these forms.
  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete any outstanding paperwork so that you can get the most out of your evaluation time.
  • Please dress comfortably so you can easily access your problem areas and move around.
  • If you plan to use insurance, please bring it with you so we can make a copy of your card for our records.
  • Please bring any referrals, prescriptions, or test results from your primary care physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.

When you call our office, please have your prescription and insurance card ready. This will allow us to confirm your insurance benefits and provide you with a coverage estimate.

How is physical therapy different for older people?

At IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy, we understand that as we age, our bodies become more vulnerable to certain health risks. Degeneration of our bodies is a normal, natural process that we will all go through. There is no way to avoid all of the changes that come with aging, but staying active and taking care of your health are the most effective ways to reduce or delay the risk of aging-related health conditions.

Age-related changes in strength, joint mobility, tissue flexibility, coordination, and reaction time, for example, will affect our balance and increase our risk of falling. We will investigate your medical history, determine what factors may be contributing to your fall risk, and work with you to restore your function and reduce your risks at our New York, NY clinic.

Aging also has an impact on healing times and your body's ability to tolerate changes in activity levels. Maintaining your health and function requires you to stay active.

Our team at IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy can assist you if you are looking for physical therapists who understand how to navigate the effects of aging.

For more information, please contact our office right away.

Why is physical therapy taking longer than I expected?

Although there are typical stages of healing, everyone is unique, and so is their ability to heal.

At IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy, you will receive a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. Throughout your recovery, our team will provide constant feedback and allow for program refinement to ensure optimal results.

The most common causes of delayed recovery are attempting to do too much too soon or failing to do enough. Physical therapists thrive when they can find a happy medium. We refine your program and maximize your results in the shortest amount of time possible by using concrete physiological benchmarks and your individual treatment response.

If you have any questions or concerns about the duration of your treatment plan, please consult with our physical therapist in our clinic. We are here to assist you throughout this process by providing clarity. Throughout each session, we will keep you informed of your progress.

Do you offer treatment for my condition at your clinic?

Physical therapists are trained to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders. Most physical therapy clinics specialize in one or two areas of physical therapy.

You can trust that our skilled therapists will assess and treat your condition. Pediatric physical therapists, for example, frequently work solely with children. In contrast, orthopedic outpatient physical therapists will work with patients of all ages and conditions.

If we believe that another therapist or healthcare provider would be a better fit for you, we will make recommendations for people we know and trust.

Our physical therapists have years of university-level training in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology (the study of joint movement), neurology, and a variety of other medical sciences. All of our physical therapists are state-licensed and have completed accredited physical therapy programs.

You can be confident that you are in capable hands!

When can I expect to feel better?

Because each patient's diagnosis is unique, our therapist will collaborate with you and any other medical or healthcare provider to ensure you get the best results possible.

Our goal is to identify all of the factors that are causing your condition. To gather this information, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation and thorough history and then design a treatment plan that is appropriate for you.

Some people experience relief on the first day; for others, it is a journey filled with ups and downs. It is difficult to predict who you will be until we meet with you and examine your specific situation.

Our team is well-versed in treating all types of musculoskeletal pain and injuries. We'll give you some pointers to help you understand your condition and what to expect from therapy. These guidelines will include the expected duration of your situation as well as realistic timetables for progress.

Throughout the process, our team is here to help and answer your questions!

I don’t have any insurance. Can I continue to receive physical therapy?

Our clinic will never turn away a patient.

For patients who do not have insurance, we offer cash-based options that must be paid at the time of service. Please contact our clinic and ask our front desk about rates and payment options.

What are the office policies I should be aware of?

If you are unable to attend your appointment due to illness or another emergency, please notify us at least X hours before your scheduled appointment time.

Any appointments that are missed and not rescheduled at least X hours in advance will incur a non-refundable charge of X dollars.

We also ask that if you have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus or are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, please reschedule your appointment with our front desk so that we can keep our patients and employees safe and healthy.

What is at-home physical therapy, exactly?

Our in-home physical therapy is by request only. Physical therapists work in a variety of settings to assist people in maintaining, improving, or restoring mobility. Home therapy sessions are common for people who have recently left the hospital following an injury, surgery, or medical condition (e.g., stroke). Staying at home for physical therapy is the best option for some people.

Whether you are unable to leave the house or prefer a private PT session in the comfort of your own home, our therapists will come to you and work with you to restore your normal functional mobility.

Our therapists will arrive with everything you need to continue receiving our high-quality care. We understand that some patients find it difficult to leave their homes for physical therapy, but they still want cutting-edge care and the results they deserve.

Begin right away with IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy. We provide in-home physical therapy services to help you regain functionality in the privacy of your own home.

Is IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy a Home Health Agency?

The simple answer is no.

IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy is not the same as Home Health physical therapy. We are a private practice outpatient service that sees patients in the comfort of their own homes. Home health agencies, on the other hand, typically provide various services and are governed by different rules.

Our home therapy program provides individuals who are not considered homebound with an alternative way to receive proven physical therapy treatments in the comfort of their own homes.

Before making an appointment, make sure to check with your insurance company.

Is a physician referral required for in-home physical therapy?

Yes and no.

Direct Access means you do not have to obtain a physician's referral. You can now access physical therapist services for evaluation and treatment without a physician referral in every state.

However, some states limit the number of visits and/or the length of time you can see a physical therapist without the involvement of a physician.

If you are concerned in any way, we recommend that you first contact your doctor and request a prescription be faxed to us, or that you contact us directly, and we will obtain a prescription from the doctor.

Why choose IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy over an outpatient clinic for physical therapy

One of the most common reasons for choosing home physical therapy is safety. People who are immunocompromised due to diseases or chemotherapy treatments, for example, may prefer to stay at home to limit their exposure to potentially fatal illnesses.

COVID-19 has lately become a common reason for choosing home therapy sessions.

To keep our patients safe, we follow CDC guidelines and universal precautions to help older adults reduce their risk of COVID-19 and other illnesses.

Traveling to a clinic for physical therapy sessions is another common reason for home therapy. Our patients do not have to worry about driving or arranging transportation to the clinic 2-3 times per week. Home therapy also assists people in navigating the actual obstacles and constraints they face at home.

Our therapists are highly skilled at working with people of all ages and abilities, and they will provide the same level of care at home that you would receive in an outpatient clinic.

Can in-home therapy treat my condition?

In-home physical therapy can help with a variety of orthopedic conditions, such as back and neck pain, arthritis, and balance and gait issues. We also treat neurological conditions such as Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, and stroke.

Physical therapists are movement experts who specialize in treating musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. We work with a variety of healthcare providers to ensure that your treatments are as effective as possible.

To learn more about the conditions we treat, please contact IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy.

How long do in-home physical therapy sessions last?

All of our appointments last approximately 1 hour.

The length of your care will also be determined by your specific needs. Our therapist will discuss their assessment and answer any questions you may have during your initial evaluation. At this point, our therapist will recommend an estimated duration and frequency for your treatment.

It is common to see our therapist more frequently at the start of your treatment, and you will most likely see our therapist twice (or sometimes three times) per week to begin with. Your sessions will become more spaced out as you progress through treatment.

Payment and fees for in-home physical therapy

We recommend that you contact your insurance company to discuss your coverage and requirements for in-home physical therapy. Before your first visit, our administrative team will review your insurance benefits and discuss what, if any, payments are required at your appointment date.

Cash, check, debit card, and credit card are all accepted. We are also happy to discuss our payment options. If you believe you are a good candidate, please call today to schedule an appointment.

How can I determine if my insurance covers in-home physical therapy?

Insurance can be difficult to understand. The first step would be to contact your insurance company and discuss your plan with them directly.

We will do our best to answer any questions you may have at IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy. Once we receive your information, we will verify your insurance coverage and notify you of the details.

How do I schedule an in-home therapy appointment?

Our scheduling is simple.

What settings do our therapists work in?

Our clinic provides outpatient care in Manhattan. In-home therapy is included as part of our coverage. We are also permitted to provide care in a senior independent living facility or an assisted living facility.

We are unable to provide services in hospitals or long-term care nursing homes.

When will I begin noticing pain relief?

Our therapist will collaborate with you, your physician, and other members of your healthcare team to develop the best treatment plan for your specific condition. A thorough evaluation can predict the likely outcome of physical therapy intervention.

Our goal is to help you find pain relief and return to normal function as soon as possible. Several factors influence how long it takes to find relief.

Your overall health, the nature of your specific condition, other health issues, the severity and duration of your condition, and your participation, for example, will all have an impact on your outcome.

Can I continue with therapy after my pain has subsided?

Yes, once you have completed your therapy sessions, our therapist will provide you with an at-home continuing therapy program. We can also schedule follow-up assessments to ensure that you are still doing well and to address any new issues that have arisen.

In addition, we will work with you to determine whether any equipment or supplies (such as bands, weights, etc.) would be beneficial to your recovery.

What if my insurance isn’t accepted/I don’t have insurance?

We offer a self-pay option if you do not have insurance, if your insurance does not cover in-home therapy, or if your coverage has expired.

To learn more about our self-pay options and rates, please contact our front desk.

Can you provide an itemized receipt?

Yes. Give us a call at 212-226-4816 Mon-Thurs, 8 am - 7 pm ET, Mon – Thurs; 8 am – 5 pm ET or email reception@ipanyc.com. We can provide a ‘super bill’ that will show each session as a separate line item for the time period you request.

Can I go to any physical therapy clinic?

According to “The Patient’s Bill of Rights” law, you can decide what physical therapy clinic you choose for your care.

Although a lot of physicians recommend a physical therapy clinic they may prefer, you are under no obligation to go to that clinic. No medical practitioner, insurance company, or other entity can insist you attend a specific physical therapy clinic. The choice is yours to make.

Your basic patient rights include:

The right to information about quality: You can look up information about medical practitioners' credentials, statistics regarding hospitals and clinics, and what your health plan covers in easy-to-understand language.

The right to choose a healthcare provider: Besides your primary healthcare provider, this also covers specialists, including physical therapists.

The right to emergency services: You can't be denied treatment in an emergency.

The right to make decisions: It's up to you to decide which course of treatment you want to follow.

The right to respect: You must be treated with respect regardless of sex, age, race, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.

The right to confidentiality: Your health information is private and cannot be released without your consent.

The right to complain: All providers (insurance, physicians, clinics and hospitals, etc.) must have a grievance procedure.

All fifty states and the District of Columbia have made a ruling enabling patients “Direct Access” to physical therapy services and programs. This means you can contact a physical therapist directly without a physician's prescription or referral.

How can I make an appointment?

Scheduling an appointment at IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy is easier than ever. Our scheduling is easy, and we offer a convenient location and appointment times. We have morning and evening appointments available to meet the demands of your busy schedule.

What should I wear to my first evaluation and treatment session?

It’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows the therapist access to the areas of your current complaints. A loose fitting shirt, tank top, or sports bra is recommended for any problem with your neck or upper extremity. The easier it is to access the affected area, the better we can care for you and get to the root of what may be causing your current condition.

How is my progress measured?

Physical therapists primarily measure your impairments and your functional limitations.

Impairments include:

  • Pain
  • Weakness
  • Loss of motion
  • Paresthesias (numbness, tingling, pins, needles, etc.)

Functional limitations include:

  • Lying
    • Sleep
    • Rolling over
    • Getting up out of bed
  • Sitting
    • Moving from standing to sitting
    • Moving from sitting to standing
  • Standing
  • Walking
    • Level ground
    • Stairs
    • Uneven ground
  • Running
  • etc.

Tracking your impairments and functional abilities gives physical therapists objective information to compare with initial measurements. In addition, your reports and personal experiences help to validate your improvements and clue our therapist to regressions and/or lack of progress.

The bottom line is that you should notice improvements in how you feel and function throughout therapy. If you are not following an anticipated path of progress, our therapist will reassess the situation or make recommendations for further testing or treatments.

How long is each appointment going to be?

All of our sessions are 60 minutes long, whether it is the initial evaluation or subsequent visits.**

Your unique needs will determine the frequency of your weekly appointments, which your therapist will discuss with you.

It is common for our therapist to want to see you more often in the early stages of your care to assess your progress and confirm your treatment plan. You'll probably see our therapist twice a week initially and then make your appointments more spaced out as you proceed through treatment.

What should I do to prepare for my first appointment?

There are a few things we ask all patients to bring with them on their first visit to our office.

  • Please go online and fill out our forms, or you can print out the patient forms, complete them, and bring them with you for your initial evaluation. If you cannot do this or do not have access to a printer/computer, please allow extra time to fill these out upon arrival.
  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork so that you can maximize your time in your evaluation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your treatment areas.
  • If you intend to use insurance, please bring your insurance information (we will make a copy of your card).
  • Please bring any referrals, prescriptions, and test results from your referring physician, Nurse Practitioner, or physician assistant, if applicable.

Please have your prescription and insurance card available when you call our office. This will allow us to verify your insurance benefits and provide you with an estimate of coverage.

What types of patient injuries, diagnosis do you treat?

We help patients rehabilitate from a large range of orthopedic, neurological, and chronic conditions. See our complete list of the most COMMON INJURIES we treat.

How does an initial evaluation differ from a follow-up visit?

IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy one-on-one treatments are always provided by a licensed physical therapist. Please continue to bring appropriate attire to allow access to your area of complaint. Following your initial evaluation, treatment sessions always begin with a quick re-evaluation, immediately followed by hands-on treatment. All sessions will last approximately 60 minutes.

When can I expect to feel and see results?

You should expect to see and feel results within 1 – 3 visits. Your recovery will vary depending on whether you are rehabilitating a recent injury, modifying a behavior that may be the source of dysfunction or chronic pain, or coming in for an everyday body mechanics assessment and training for injury prevention. Optimal functional results are achieved through collaboration with your physical therapist and based on mutually established goals.

Do the results last and if so, for how long?

Current research has shown that it can take up to 8 weeks to learn a new efficient behavioral pattern. As part of the IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy’s comprehensive approach, we advocate 6-month check-ins in a concerted effort to sustain the optimal performance achieved from your customized treatment program. Stress, environment changes, and other external factors can derail good habits and re-established movement patterns, and oftentimes 1 visit over a 6 month period can prevent you from falling back into old, damaging patterns. Think of it as going to a dentist for a bi-annual cleaning, equipped with the logic that it’s much easier to endure a teeth cleaning than a root canal!

Do you accept insurance?

While we expect payment at the time of service, many patients are able to obtain reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. On an average, patients receive between 70-80% reimbursement once their deductibles have been met. We are happy to provide you a superbill for this purpose. As a courtesy, if requested, we will electronically file all claims and take care of pre-authorization. We recommend that you call us at 212-226-4816 Mon-Thurs between 8am and 7 pm ET, and Friday between 8am-5pm or email us at reception@ipaynyc.com to assist you.

Can I pay using my Flex Spending or Health Savings Account card?

Yes, as long as your FAS or HSA card is affiliated with a major credit card. If you would like to use your FSA or HSA card to pay for a portion of your payment and apply the balance to a different credit card, please give us a call at 212-226-4816 Mon-Thurs, 8 am - 7 pm ET, Mon – Thurs; 8 am – 5 pm ET, Fri or email us at reception@ipaynyc.com.

How long do I have to use the funds in my Flexible Spending Account?

If you don’t use all of the money you’ve put in your FSA for the year, you lose the money that’s in your account when the year ends. Most FSA plans end on December 31st, but your plan may offer a grace period until March. Please check with your employer or insurance provider to find out the terms for your plan.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept all major credit and debit cards, AMEX, Visa, Mastercard and Discover, cash and checks.

When do you charge my credit card?

We are a fee for service practice and all of our charges are processed at the completion of your visit.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to receive treatment?

The short answer is no.

Direct Access refers to your legal right to be treated by a physical therapist without a prescription or referral, so if you don't have a prescription for physical therapy, there is nothing to worry about!

All fifty states and the District of Columbia have ruled enabling patients "Direct Access" to physical therapy services and programs. You can contact a physical therapist without a physician's prescription or referral.

How do I change or cancel an appointment?

IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy has a 24 hour cancellation policy. All appointments cancelled less than 24 prior to the scheduled time will be charged a cancellation fee. If your appointment is on Monday, you will need to cancel your appointment by the Friday before at 5pm. The best way to change or cancel an appointment is to give us a call at 212-226-4816 Mon-Thurs, between 8 am - 7 pm ET, or between 8am -5pm ET on Friday or email reception@ipanyc.com. We will do our best to accommodate all rescheduling requests, however, if your request is in less than 24 hours, you will be responsible for payment for that session.

Do I receive an appointment confirmation?

Yes. Upon booking an appointment, either online or by phone, you will receive an email confirming the date, time, and physical therapist whom you’ll be seeing. You will also receive an email confirmation the day before your appointment. Please check your spam folder if you do not see this email. Confirmation back from our patients is not required.

How does the IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy cost of treatment compare to other physical therapy practices?

We believe in treating one patient per hour

It has been our experience that 60-minute treatment sessions significantly reduce a patient’s overall recovery time and number of visits.

I don’t have any insurance. Can I continue to receive physical therapy?

Our clinic will never turn away a patient.

For patients who do not have insurance, we offer cash-based options that must be paid at the time of service. Please contact our clinic and ask our front desk about rates and payment options.

How are physical therapy treatment sessions impacted by out-of-network insurance benefits?

We are out-of-network providers of physical therapy. Reimbursement is dependent on your insurance plan’s out-of-network coverage. This is based on your out of network deductible, coinsurance, and out of pocket maximum. Our staff would be happy to help look into your benefits and go over a detailed explanation with you.

Time & Cost Comparison between in and out-of-network reimbursement

In-network insurance companies will not reimburse physical therapy services for 1 full hour of specialized one-on-one care. The typical in-network physical therapist treatment time is reduced to an average of only 15 minutes per session. A typical insurance co-pay is $30. A full hour of care would require 4 sessions and result in $120 of out-of-pocket expenses for in-network copay, plus the cost and time for traveling.

Why “Functional” Manual Therapy™ (FMT)?

To better understand why the founders of FMT chose to delineate their system from standard manual therapy, it might help to understand their professional journey and the development of this system of patient care that is changing the lives of patients worldwide.

Both Gregg and Vicky began their professional career in a world renowned rehabilitation center, primarily working with patients who had suffered from neurological impairments such as strokes, MS, Parkinson’s, spinal cord and head injuries, and a variety of lesser-known pathologies. For Gregg and Vicky, their daily goals were to get patients moving and re-learning how to do the most fundamental activities such as sitting and walking. But they did not use machines or modalities to improve their patient’s function, they used their hands and an advanced method of neuromuscular facilitation known as PNF. It was this early use of their hands to feel what the body was doing and know how to facilitate the body to move efficiently that set the foundation for what would become Functional Manual Therapy™.

In the mid to late 70’s, their practice shifted more to individuals with pain or injuries., and those who just wanted to run the 800 meter faster in the Corporate Cup. But instead of focusing on the elimination of pain or helping patients heal from an injury or surgery, Gregg and Vicky found themselves applying the same “function based” approach they had used in the rehabilitation center to individuals with orthopedic and sports issues. When an elite runner would come into their Marin CA clinic with a hamstring tear, they would assess the runner’s ability to roll, walk, and run, as well as treat the hamstring. The result, the hamstring tear would heal and the patient would be running the 800 faster than before his the injury. As their understanding of the interconnectedness of the human body developed, their expectations for patients’ outcomes continued to evolve. No longer were they willing to just have a patient feel better, they wanted every patient to experience his or her untapped existing potential for function. This expectation inspired them to leave no tissue untouched that may have an impact on function. They studied and explored the human body to better understand how small injuries or inefficient postures and movements could disrupt the homeostasis of the musculoskeletal system and slowly create compensations throughout one’s body. Gregg and Vicky recognized that physical therapists’ had the education and passion to impact patient’s lives on a whole different higher level by treating the whole body, regardless of the presenting diagnosis or symptoms.

When you come in for your first session at IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy, our physical therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation that includes a detailed history and a thorough physical examination. The initial assessment determines the severity of your injury or illness and aids in determining the source of your symptoms and the factors contributing to your condition.

Physical therapists frequently collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide confirmation or potential contradictions to a diagnosis to ensure that your diagnosis is correct and your treatment plan is appropriate.

Can I seek treatment at any physical therapy clinic?

You have the right to choose which physical therapy clinic you want to use for your care, according to the law known as "The Patient's Bill of Rights."

Although many physicians may recommend a physical therapy clinic that they prefer, you are not required to go to that clinic. No medical professional, insurance company, or other entity has the authority to compel you to attend a specific physical therapy clinic. The decision is entirely yours.

You also do not have to wait for a physician to refer you to the clinic of your choice, thanks to direct access laws.

You have legal access to physical therapy services, including evaluations and treatments, with direct access. Every state, the District of Columbia, and the United States Virgin Islands permit evaluation and treatment without a physician referral.

To put it another way, you can select the clinic of your choice!

Is it necessary for my doctor to refer me for physical therapy?

The simple answer is no.

Direct access regulations allow individuals to go directly to a physical therapy clinic of their choice and receive the treatment they require.

Direct Access allows you to see a physical therapist without a prescription or a doctor's referral. Physical therapy treatments and programs are now available to patients in all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

Will my insurance pay for the treatment?

We understand that dealing with insurance can be difficult. That's why IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy would be delighted to assist you and answer your questions. It is critical to contact your insurance provider to determine your coverage under your specific policy.
