How Physical Therapy Can Support You During Pregnancy and Postpartum Recovery
Pregnancy is one of life’s most exciting experiences, but it can be taxing on your body. During pregnancy, the body goes through many changes, including changes in posture, how you hold and move your body, and changes in the pelvic muscles and ligaments as they prepare for delivery. These changes can result in back pain and pelvic floor issues.
If you are pregnant or have recently given birth and are experiencing pelvic pain, incontinence, or any other physical change in your body, our holistic-minded physical therapists at IPA Manhattan Physical Therapy can assist you!
Many pregnant women experience lower back pain or pelvic pain, and a large percentage of them continue to have pain a year or more after giving birth.
Muscle weakness can cause urinary incontinence and make it difficult to activate core muscles. Despite the fact that these are some of the more unpleasant aspects of pregnancy, prenatal and postnatal treatments can help your body prepare for the journey ahead.
We use massage therapy and pelvic floor therapy techniques to make your pregnancy and delivery as comfortable as possible.
Our team in New York, NY will address your specific needs in a comprehensive manner. We’ll meet you where you are and provide you with the support and guidance you need to have the best birthing experience possible!

What are the most common problems that women face during and after pregnancy?
During and after pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes significant changes. We learn more about ourselves and our health with each step of the journey.
Some of the common physical changes that occur during pregnancy may also result in the following issues:
Back and/or pelvic discomfort
Pain is frequently felt in the sacroiliac (SI) joint, tailbone, hips, and lower back. Some people have pain in their pelvis on the pubic symphysis.
Tension or pain in the pelvic floor muscles
The perineum is the area between your vagina and rectum that contains your pelvic floor muscles. During pregnancy, these muscles can become tense and painful.
During the delivery process, you may need to have a c-section or an episiotomy, which requires special care to avoid long-term pain or scar tissue formation. Adhesions that result in scar tissue can cause restrictions in the body’s myofascial system.
Diastasis recti
Some women may experience a separation of their abdominal muscles, which is known as diastasis recti. A diastasis recti can cause the belly to “pooch,” interfering with abdominal muscle strengthening while the body recovers and heals after delivery.
Urinary Incontinence
Urine leakage when coughing, laughing, or sneezing is common during pregnancy and often worsens in the third trimester. There are numerous treatment options available for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles before birth, as well as education on resolving and managing symptoms.
Our therapists use the most recent evidence-based clinical knowledge in the field to identify and treat common pregnancy and delivery conditions.
